 |
For the past two hundred and fifty years fireboats have provided fire cover on some of the nation’s rivers, protecting river-side buildings, river traffic, and occasionally venturing into the estuary to assist at ship fires. During the war years particularly, the boats pumped ashore huge quantities of water for use at fires inland.
Although this book starts with the early days of manual fire floats it concentrates on mechanically propelled fireboats carrying mechanically powered pumps, operated by the public fire brigades of the UK. It navigates its way from their origins, via the war years, to the present generation of fire service vessels. The names and brief details of more than three hundred and fifty Fire Service fireboats are given and additionally, details of a few fireboats used by industrial concerns are also included
